The Heart of Learning

Duncan is learning about the respiratory and circulatory system this term. To further enhance what they are taught in class, the teachers took them on a field trip to a local medical school for some hands-on learning. They got a brief lecture and then went into the practical anatomy lab to dissect pig hearts.

I was impressed with how these kids dug right into the matter at hand, jamming fingers through heart valves and tracing the flow of heart through the organ. They carefully cut where instructed and identified all structures. There was very little squeamishness. The class seemed intent and engaged which is a huge tribute to their science teacher and other teachers who prepared them so well for this experience. I felt very lucky to get to chaperone this trip and even luckier to know that my son gets to spend his days surrounded by his dedicated team of teachers at school.

Dissecting stuff was some of my favorite stuff when I was taking biology.
