Wood Working

1 Mar 2010 by admin, 4 Comments »

Yesterday, John and I built the shelves I’ve been obsessing about.  Neither of us have much experience with wood working but we had enough to build these ones.  These shelves were easy-peasy to build.

I learned a lot about how to use an pneumatic nail gun.  Like, when it sparks and kicks back, that means it is jammed.  I now know how to fix a jammed nail gun.  Not the most fun part of the experience, but useful knowledge.

We used a lot of wood glue.  I’m sure there are drips of it all over my floors.  If my floors were cleaner, I might notice where they are.

After three hours (with a little break to drive a kid to a playdate), we have TWO new shelves (the second one is wedged in the hall where I could not get a good photo).  This one will live right next to my back door.  Once it is painted, I will put some bins on the shelves to store hats, mittens, and shoes.  I’m hoping to get organized.  We can always hope, eh?

I’m not sure where the second shelf will live.  Maybe in the hallway?  Or the boys’ room?  Or on the screen porch?  Dunno.  I only needed one but since the plans were for two, we made them both.  Here’s hoping for some nice weather this week so I can get out the paint and finish them.  Stay tuned for final photos!

They turned out great! You did a great job. I love reading the Knock Off Wood blog and am trying to get the courage to give it a shot. It looks like you picked a great starting project. Congrats!
